Hallertau Brewery: Redefining the Modern Beer Garden
The evolution of the Hallertau Brewery was executed in two strategic stages: the comprehensive interior renovation of the restaurant and brewery, followed by the ambitious development of the high-capacity exterior beer garden. The design language is intentionally “pared-back,” featuring a modest, shed-like architectural form that aligns with Hallertau’s relaxed brand identity.
To navigate New Zealand’s unpredictable climate, we designed a large-scale retractable canopy. Its vibrant, carnival-inspired colours inject a festive energy into the space while providing essential protection from the harsh sun. The boundary is defined by a custom in-situ concrete fence, which, when paired with Jared Lockhart’s lush landscaping, creates a “Pacific-Tropical” interpretation of the classic European beer garden. The result is a highly functional, quintessentially Kiwi environment that celebrates the local love for outdoor socialising.
